1 Review 1.1 Setup In the previous lecture, we considered an apparatus consisting of three planes: • an aperture plane. Coordinates on the aperture plane are denoted by x and y. • a transform plane. Coordinates on the transform plane are denoted by X and Y. • an image plane. Coordinates on the image plane are denoted by x and y. We defined the spatial frequencies, µ = k f X ν = k f Y where f is the focal length of a thin field lens located an equidistance f from the aperture and the transform planes. The spatial frequencies have units of inverse meters.

In this paper, we employ the concept of the Generalized Discrete Fourier Transform, which in turn relies on the Hasse derivative of polynomials, to give a general construction of Reed-Solomon codes over Galois fields of characteristic not necessarily co-prime with the length of the code. The constructed linear codes enjoy nice algebraic properties just as the classic one.
